Lasik (Part 2)

I was reading up on articles, reviews and stuffs about Lasik and i completely freaked out.

Firstly, i chanced upon this person who jotted down his entire post operation account. He said that the side effects are pretty toned down and different from what he had expected (though he didnt prepare himself well for it and that effects also varies among individual). Those side effects that i thought at most last for 3 months can in fact be permanent. Even though not permanent also can drag on for as long as 2 years (as described by the person). Also, this person have different glasses for different things, for driving, for night time and for using the computer.

Secondly, i found out from the Singapore National Eye Centre website that if the operation does not give satisfactory results, it will still be perfectly fine to put on glasses back but NOT contact lenses! It says that not everyone can put on contact lenses after the operation because the shape of the cornea has been changed by the laser surgery. I really didnt know about this and im glad that i’ve researched and read about it. I was still thinking worse come to worse if operation not successful i’ll just get back to what i’ve been doing now thats all.

So, after reading up all these, i think i might just as well live with what i am currently having right? At the very least i can still put on contacts. For a moment i really asked myself if this is necessary. However, why i originally insist on the operation is not just for convenience sake, it is to reduce my super high myopia and the irritating astigmatism. Lets do the math to see how my eyes will be doing if i never have the operation to reduce the degrees:

13 years = 800 degrees (as mentioned in the Lasik post earlier)

Lets assume that i live up till the age of 60.

Therefore, i still have another 60-21 = 39 years more to live.

The degrees of my eyes as of the age of 60:

(39/13) * 800 = 2400

WTH??!!

I think i’ll go blind by the time i hit 1500 degrees. Even if i managed to not go blind, my spectacles will be as thick as 5 A Maths textbook.

=X

Also, now that i check out more options at various places for me to have my operation at, i found out that the prices varies greatly.

Option 1: $2388 for both eyes, inclusive of 3 years post-op follow up.

Option 2: $2100 for an eye. Follow up charges ranges $35 to $45, not inclusive of medicine.

Option 3: $1700 for an eye (senior consultant). Follow up charges waived for the first 4 consultations.

Actually i was thinking of having it straight after my birthday and before i go off to Australia, but i guess i changed my mind and decided to do it after i come back from the trip, to give myself more time to think about it.

One thing that i read has been deeply embedded into my mind:

This operation is non-reversible.

Even though technology is so advanced now, theres still this level of risk that exists.

So, should i really take this risk or not?

I think i better go and do more research about it before making a final decision.

I really dont want to make a decision that will make me regret for life.
